I enjoyed working with Tableau substantially. I liked how intuitive the drag and drop mechanics were, and I also liked all the different faculties that I could use to customize my charts. Tableau is a beginner-friendly software which is capable of creating various visuals that effectively convey non visual data.

Module 5 Assignment
Here is my tableau assignment: In my Chloropleth map, I added an occupation slider, along with a gender slider, so we could map how assigned and assumed gender roles developed over the course of time. This then ties to the heat and tree maps to show how industry and opportunity grew in NY, attracting workers […]
https://public.tableau.com/profile/joni5577#!/vizhome/Week5AssignmentDataVisualization/Dashboard1 Unfortunately, the Tableau Public site is down so I can’t embed my dashboard, but this is the link to my workbook and the dashboard I created. I provided a screenshot as well, just in case the link does not work. var divElement = document.getElementById(‘viz1617816906520’); var vizElement = divElement.getElementsByTagName(‘object’)[0]; if ( divElement.offsetWidth > 800 ) […]
Module 5: Using Data
var divElement = document.getElementById(‘viz1616446072303’); var vizElement = divElement.getElementsByTagName(‘object’)[0]; if ( divElement.offsetWidth > 800 ) { vizElement.style.minWidth=’420px’;vizElement.style.maxWidth=’650px’;vizElement.style.width=’100%’;vizElement.style.minHeight=’587px’;vizElement.style.maxHeight=’887px’;vizElement.style.height=(divElement.offsetWidth*0.75)+’px’;} else if ( divElement.offsetWidth > 500 ) { vizElement.style.minWidth=’420px’;vizElement.style.maxWidth=’650px’;vizElement.style.width=’100%’;vizElement.style.minHeight=’587px’;vizElement.style.maxHeight=’887px’;vizElement.style.height=(divElement.offsetWidth*0.75)+’px’;} else { vizElement.style.width=’100%’;vizElement.style.height=’1177px’;} var scriptElement = document.createElement(‘script’); scriptElement.src = ‘https://public.tableau.com/javascripts/api/viz_v1.js’; vizElement.parentNode.insertBefore(scriptElement, vizElement); In these visualizations, I wanted to explore the relationship between race, gender, and birthplace and life in Albany. […]
Here is my assignment: (sorry it is late- I just saw it was still a draft in my posts!) In this course, I enjoyed the data cleaning the most- it was strangely satisfying! I enjoyed the other aspects (even colab!), but there is something just reassuring about knowing the language of what I am doing […]
Module 5
Here is the link to my Tableau Public account in case the story does not allow you to click through the visuals. I focused the fist two visuals on Irish immigration and the third one gender and occupation. Visual 1: This pie chart shows the amount of people who indicated that they were born in […]
Additional Visualization Narration Additional Vis #1 – In this pie chart of Albany, NY population data between 1850 and 1940, I used race to delineate population percentages for the given period. I excluded “White” data responses to focus the vis more closely on minority populations, and colored it according to race. I also added a […]
Module 5
In my Line Graph, I show the population of people in Albany for the entire census. I used race as a filter but excluded Native Americans. I was surprised to find how there was little increase in the population of Black and Japanese and Chinses people, even in the later periods displayed on the chart. […]
Module 5: Using Data
I chose Option A, and, as a second-generation Capital Region Italian (though my people are Schenectady, not Albany), I decided to create visualizations showing the number of Italian immigrants recorded in the Albany census from 1880-1940 (I excluded 1850, as Italy wasn’t yet a unified nation at that point..). The first slide shows the number […]
For the side-by-side bar chart I created a chart which tracks the population of Albany in each Census year, broken down by race. I included a filter for race. For the line graph I created a graph which charts the top 10 most popular occupations in Albany from 1850-1940 based on the census data. This […]
