Module 6-Final Project Proposal

Here are two different datasets I am interested in looking at for the final project that Professor Kane provided. I think for both of these datasets, I could work with Tableau or some other sort of data visualization project.

  1. Tim Renner, “Haunted Places in America.” https://data.world/timothyrenner/haunted-places [Download]
  2. National Register of Historic Places. (“Everything” spreadsheet) https://www.nps.gov/subjects/nationalregister/data-downloads.htm [Download]

I was drawn to the Haunted Places in America because I originally looked at this dataset in a previous assignment. I think it would be interesting to look at it in more detail. Some questions that could be answered with this dataset are: What is the most haunted state in America? What are the different types of Hauntings? What are the historical contexts behind the places that are haunted? What are the haunted places in New York like compared to other states?

For the National Register, I was drawn to this one because another class I am taking this semester is looking at the National Register. So again, I think it would be interesting to look at this in more detail. Questions could be: What states have the most places listed? What are the different time periods of the places listed? What are the historical reasons for which the places are being listed?

Those are all good questions; the historical context of haunted places might be difficult to answer.

For both the datasets, you’ll want to control for population since places with more people probably have both more hauntings and more buildings. (This can be easily done either in Tableau or with a spreadsheet formula). You can get county-level population data for the whole US here: https://www.nhgis.org/ Unless the years column has a big date spread, I’d just use the most recent population numbers.

Ryan is looking at using the Natl Register data and Hannah and Thomas are looking at using the hauntings data if you’re interested in a group project.
