Module 4 Assignment Getting Data

Module 4 assignments

A concept I found difficult?

Keeping everything straight! The gender inference project had me flipping between all the projects for the past few weeks. I began with the intention of keeping everything exact and succinct but I think by the end I was just flailing words about- “This is the thing that makes it do the thing you want it to do.”

Maybe not quite that bad.

But I think I share the “rushing through” that many people have noted. And then the dead eyes into the screen when that error comes up.

Learning the different methods of pulling information out for ease is incredibly helpful for saving time and (as our previous readings have pointed out and the pandemic has shown us) because our methods are changing. Having more information available more clearly and more quickly would encourage better use of time for in person research as well. All of this would be useful, obviously.  My Intro to PH class last semester looked at Panorama projects and the urban renewal data visualizations really resonated with me (https://dsl.richmond.edu/panorama/). I looked at their sources and ended up at the HUD site which has library with datasets (Research | HUD.gov / U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) ). Some don’t go back very far but it still is interesting to poke around!

Glad you looked at the panorama sites previously! A lot of those are also built with census data, which is pretty easy to get, and they often do their first drafts of projects in Tableau so a lot of what the panorama projects do can be replicated in Tableau.

Notebooks look good; sometimes “does the thing” is all you need!
