Module 4 Assignment Getting Data

Module 4 Assignments

I am still not sure I completely understand what it is I am doing. These assignments were challenging, but I think I am beginning to understand them a little better. I found the web scraping assignment to be the most difficult. I enjoyed the gender influence assignment because I found it helpful to try and write out the directions to each step in my own words. I feel this helped my understanding of it. I can see how gender influence and geocoding could help me in my own research. It would be helpful to let the computer find the gender and location of places instead of having to search for it myself. I can also see how these can help to sort out or remove any unwanted information to make the results clearer and just get the specific information you are looking for when researching. I think it would be interesting to search data from the New York State Archives (http://www.archives.nysed.gov/) because there are so many different collections to choose from. It might also be interesting to look at other smaller local archives that have online databases. It might help to sort out some of the information about the people who lived in the local area.

Assignments look good. And yes, doing it more, reading through code to figure it out yourself, and trying different things are a good way to get a better handle on it–it’s not like reading an article where you can just read for the content and you’ve already got a handle on how quotation marks work 🙂
